Holy Spirit traffic lights
John 16:13 (NLT) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.
If we are sitting at an intersection waiting to go somewhere, we will never know whether we are supposed to go or stop or what’s coming our way if we never look up from our dashboard or the lines on the road we are on. Our dashboard can tell us how much fuel we have in the tank and the road may give us some directions to get to where we’re going, but they can’t tell us whether to stop or go. They can’t tell us what’s coming or when and where to turn.
In this way, the Holy Spirit is kind of like our traffic light. The Spirit of God is eternal, He has already seen what is coming your way and what is around the corners you are blind to. He is with you always to show you what you can’t see and help you navigate through confusing, blind corners.
Maybe you feel stuck because you’re sitting at a green light and you don’t even know it’s green because you’ve never looked up from your dashboard to see that the Holy Spirit is telling you to go.
Maybe you feel overworked and out of gas because you’ve been driving, driving, driving keeping your eyes on your dashboard and just paying attention to the miles you are churning out and the cost of the fuel you have to keep pumping into your tank, and the whole time, you’re blowing through red light after red light. The Holy Spirit is screaming at you to stop, but you have no idea because you’ve never looked up.
Maybe you’re bored and getting depressed by a nagging desire for some adventure because you haven’t looked up from the lines on the road ahead to see that the Holy Spirit is giving you green turn arrows at every junction.
The Holy Spirit knows the road ahead. The Spirit of God knows the future, knows your future. And the Spirit of God is here with you to tell you what to do. Breathe, friend. Take a moment, listen to the Holy Spirit and go, or stop, or turn as he lights your way on your journey with Jesus. The places you will go and the views you will see when you follow him are incomparably better than staring at your dashboard or the faded lines of the interstate.
Unleash heaven on earth,
